This album is a personal recital curated by Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, focusing on his three favourite composers: Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert. Following Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Ólafsson explores the tonal axis of E major/minor, drawing out the verdant hues he perceives within it. The centrepiece is Beethoven’s Op. 109 sonata, which the pianist illuminates with his signature clarity, lightness, and transparent touch. This luminous approach extends to Bach’s Prelude in E major and Schubert’s Sonata in E minor, the latter imbued with tender sentimentality. Bach’s Partita No. 6 is also permeated by a persistent sense of lightness, rather than the gravity and depth others might emphasise. By remaining faithful to his singular voice, Ólafsson gives a new face to these immortal pages.
