The Going Home Project, a group of Korean and international artists led by Yeol Eum Son, continues the complete chamber music works of Ravel in this admirable second volume. The program brings together some pages from the 1920s, signed by the French composer, his fine pen imbued with neoclassicism, but also with a deep sorrow emblematic of the decade following the Great War. The approach of the four performers places high value on sobriety, balance, and clarity, embracing an intimate and expressive palette without ever forcing the line. Damin Kim and Whoongmee Moon traverse the astonishing sonata for violin and cello, restoring the chiseled reliefs and tangy dissonances of the score with complicity and piquancy. Three works for violin and piano form the rest of the album, where the violin of Svetlin Roussev, with its silvery timbres, is the ideal partner for the sparkling keyboard of the Korean pianist. Together, they defend a purified vision through the subtle Berceuse, written in homage to Gabriel Fauré as well as the famous sonata no. 2, delivered with elegance and simplicity. The goldsmith’s work of the performers amazes with its refinement and discreet virtuosity, which also knows how to unfold with panache, as shown by the brilliant Tzigane, a rhapsody made of a thousand shimmering colors. © Melissa Khong/Qobuz
