While the baroque and gothic style of The Last Dinner Party is grabbing all the attention, it’s good to remember that Florence Welch remains the active queen of this subgenre. Her sixth album with her band Florence + the Machine has the feel of an instant classic, building on the power of Lungs and Dance Fever (not to forget The Scream by Siouxsie and the Banshees and To Bring You My Love by PJ Harvey) that came before it. Welch fully surrenders to her image of an indocile witch-woman: the album’s Halloween release is no coincidence. The title track, written with Mitski and dealing with the reconciliation between the artist’s intimate self and her stage persona, mixes ghostly moans, haunted house screams, an ultra-bouncy rhythm, before concluding with an a cappella group chant. Welch underscores the lineage from Siouxsie to Tori Amos on Witch Dance, singing the high notes as if her eyes were rolling back in her head, supported by a menacing rhythm and spectral howls. Perfume and Milk is of an almost tangible sensuality: Welch paints a damp, dark forest full of sensory details. A delightfully bewitched humor shines through. “At the beginning of my career, I was constantly ridiculed and mocked for the grandness of my expression… So maybe it’s a spillage of frustration accumulated over fifteen years,” Welch stated about this work, on which Mark Bowen of the band Idles offers burning distorted guitar. Bowen produced the album with the omnipresent Aaron Dessner, as well as James Ford, and Everybody Scream captures both the band’s mystic silence and its assumed grandeur.
