《J.S. Bach: Sonatas for Viola da Gamba》is an album by violist Atsushi Sakai and harpsichordist Christophe Rousset, released in 2026 on the Aparté label. Following their acclaimed recordings of works by Marais, Couperin, and Forqueray, the duo takes on Bach’s three sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord, BWV 1027-1029—works whose dating and supposed incompleteness continue to intrigue musicologists. Based on Bach’s well-known habit of composing in cycles of six (the Brandenburg Concertos, the Solo Violin Sonatas and Partitas, the Cello Suites), the performers propose a reconstruction by including a transcription of the Violin Sonata in E Minor, BWV 1023, stylistically aligned with the gamba repertoire. Far from adding yet another recording to a well-stocked discography, Sakai and Rousset embrace artistic risk by extending rubato, stretching or accelerating tempos with elastic phrasing that achieves a rare freedom—perhaps echoing the spirit of their distant musical ancestors. The result is superb: supple, inventive, and never static, breathing life into music of profound contrapuntal sophistication. Presented in Hi-Res 24-Bit/96kHz audio, this recording captures the warm, resonant timbre of the viola da gamba and the crystalline brilliance of the harpsichord in stunning detail.
