This album centers on the unique form of three-movement symphonies, bringing together works by four composers across different eras and styles. The most notable is French composer Charlotte Sohy’s Symphony in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 10 “Grande Guerre,” composed between 1914 and 1917, showcasing masterful technique and deep personal emotion, and not premiered until a century later. The album also includes 20th-century works by Darius Milhaud and Igor Stravinsky, as well as a classical symphony by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, whose innovative role as a bridge between late Baroque and early Romanticism is highlighted here. The debut collaboration between Israeli conductor Bar Avni and the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine breathes new life into these pieces, demonstrating their exploration of off-the-beaten-path repertoire.
